Transition to Chaucer

Chaucer works with our local primary schools to ensure smooth transition for your child. We start our work early in Year 4 our student leaders visit primaries and pair up with pupils to do paired reading with pupils. As well as supporting literacy, this enables the Year 4 pupils to develop relationships with our students and provides an opportunity for your child to ask questions about life at secondary school.

We want students to make the right choice of secondary school so at Chaucer we provide you with lots of opportunities to see what we are like before they make their choice.

In year 4 our student leaders may visit primacy schools and do reading with students.

Year 5 Transition

During Year 5 pupils are invited to attend a number of enrichment afternoons at Chaucer. This provides them with an opportunity to sample a wide range of curriculum experiences and these include:

  • Design Technology
  • Art
  • Maths challenge
  • Music
  • Drama
  • French and Spanish
  • PE
  • Science
  • The LIFE curriculum

Pupils are able to enjoy our excellent facilities including an opportunity to sample our outstanding catering facilities in the dining hall. Again our student leaders play an important role in supporting pupils to enjoy their experiences.

Year 5 Feedback

During the summer term, Year 5 pupils are also invited to attend enrichment ‘clubs’ for a number of after school sessions. These include design technology, art and history ‘model making’.

‘Not normally good at making stuff but I did really well!’ A pupil from Parson Cross.

Meynall pupil, ‘It was lots of fun I really like art and making things .I liked helping other people never met before.’

‘Really enjoyed making the catapult and the teachers were really nice. Can’t wait to come back !’. Monteney pupil.

‘Our History lesson was interesting and we got to make a catapult and hit a target board. I enjoyed it and was really easy to understand. I enjoyed the discussion.’ Pupil from Foxhill.

Year 6 Transition

During Year 6 we carry out a focused programme of support for all Year 6 pupils to help them to prepare for their move to Chaucer. During the spring and summer terms pupils are visited by Mrs Tolley, the Assistant Headteacher responsible for transition, the Year Manager and members of the Learning Support team. During these visits pupils work with the Year Manager to find out more about Chaucer and are able to ask any questions they might have about life at secondary school.

Chaucer staff also speak to Year 6 teachers to find out as much as we can about each student to ensure that the transition process is as effective as possible.

In the first week of July every pupil joining Chaucer is invited to attend 3 days induction to sample life at secondary school. This provides an opportunity for pupils to meet their new form group and experience a number of lessons in different curriculum areas. This year we held an inter-form sports challenge and an attendance competition, both of which were enjoyed by all our new students.

During these 3 days there is a 'Year 6 Parents Information Evening'. This is for parents and acts as an opportunity for them to meet key staff involved with their child’s education during their first term at Chaucer.

Alongside the induction days, pupils with low self-esteem or those who are particularly nervous about coming to secondary school are identified through the primary school visits and invited in for additional sessions. This is to further support their transition and enables them to meet other pupils from different primary schools.

When only one or two pupils join Chaucer from a primary school, they are invited to spend an extra afternoon with us where they take part in activities and get to know other pupils coming from a similar situation.

To complement the transition process we also run a Year 6 summer school in August.

Parent Information Evenings

During these 3 days there is a 'Year 6 Parents Information Evening'. You will receive an invitation to join us and this provides you with an opportunity to meet key staff involved in your child’s education during their first term at Chaucer. You will also have a further opportunity to ask us any questions or share any additional information you feel we may need.

Additional transition

Alongside the induction days, pupils with low self-esteem or those who are particularly nervous about coming to secondary school are identified through the primary school visits and invited in for additional sessions. This is to further support their transition and enables them to meet other pupils from different primary schools. During these sessions pupils have an opportunity to make new friends and take part in team building activities.

When only one or two pupils join Chaucer from a primary school, they are invited to spend an extra afternoon with us where they take part in activities and get to know other pupils coming from a similar situation.

To complement the transition process we also run a Year 6 summer school in August.

We have strong student leadership at Chaucer and transition leaders work with Year 7 forms to mentor and support your child when they join us in September. They attend form time and support in making our Year 7 students as happy and confident as possible in their first few weeks. The transition leaders also assist with all of the transition events in the summer term, including attending the primary schools.

During the spring term of Year 7 your child will be invited to apply to become a student transition leader to help support the Year 6 in their move to Chaucer!
